A Sudden Hush at Lyin’ Jack’s Donuts

The holiday season always takes me back to a particularly stressful year when I was a single mom in Tulsa, OK with two sons, 12 and 14 years old, and three jobs to pay the mortgage, keep the boys in shoes, and buy groceries.  I was strung out on anxiety, caffeine, and chronic sleep deprivation.  Early mornings enroute to work I would often stop at Lyin’ Jack’s Donuts to gulp down some coffee, have a warm, glazed donut and say hi to friends before being consumed by my day.

In those days, Jack, an effusive extravert, would often be at the door welcoming customers. His warmth and cheerfulness transformed a plain little shop into a friendly kitchen for anyone walking in. There was a bulletin board on the wall filled with pictures of the growing children of the “regulars” most of whom he knew by name.  A back table was unofficially reserved for a group of retired men who would pontificate wittily over their coffee and make slyly flirtatious remarks to women customers they knew.  In front was a table with a revolving group of women coming in and out depending on their schedules.  This table was where I would gravitate to touch base with friends for a light moment and to bolster myself for the start of another harried day.  (more…)
