Dropping Out in Delray

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Full disclosure: My sister, Linda, and I are in a funky apartment across the street from the Atlantic Ocean in Delray Beach, FL. It is 7:15 a.m. and brilliant sunshine is peeking through glossy palm fronds that sway slowly in a cool morning breeze. Palm trees frame my view of the water across the street.

I am dismayed that tomorrow is February and I have already blown through the first of my two-month stay in a sultry corner of paradise. Last year we also escaped the ravages of winter up north for this little haven. However, 2010 was the coldest winter in 40 years for Florida. We are relieved that winter this year is far warmer. Most days we can have the windows and doors open and enjoy sunny early morning walks on the beach.

Linda and I have become snowbirds, like our parents whose cold-weather destination was south Texas after they retired. They were also—mom especially—the ones who exposed us to the healing power of sun, sand, and salt water. A full month of these elements has helped me to calm down, unwind, deep breathe, and recover from a prolonged siege of stress the last five months of 2010—a toxic client, rats in our condo building, hysterical neighbors, a sick cat, pulled muscle, mysterious water drip from my ceiling, cranky hot water heater…pile on the holidays, and it all got the best of me.

I am grateful that I can continue to work, no matter where I am, so long as I have an internet connection. The tricky part for me is the strong tidal pull of the ocean…it sometimes rips me away from logging billable hours. (I can’t work on the beach—too much sun glare on my computer screen.) Besides, there’s something unseemly about working on the beach.
