April 18

To honor April and poetry, I offer you this poem about my view of the earth’s labor as it gives birth to a new season…

The Madness of March

Magnolia leaves bare their waxy derrieres
before they drop to the ground in a flurry.
83 degrees one day, 37 the next.

Cherry blossoms do a pastel can-can, then
shower the earth in lace, replaced by new leaves.
Gold pollen covers sidewalks, porches, cars.

Sunbeams streak across the park, bounce off
commuter cars, and dazzle my asparagus fern.
Last night’s storm turns the park to oozing mud.

Energetic dogs and their people shake off
winter lethargy as they run in the park.
Cats shed fur coats on all available surfaces.

Miniature daffodils, pink crocus, snowbells,
hyacinths pop out from under chill rocks.
Ragweed reddens the eyes of its sufferers.

The sweetness of japonica seduces me as it
co-mingles with heady wisteria while
allergy victims snort and sneeze…

Ah, the delights of spring!
