Rose Carousel at Butchart Gardens, Victoria, BC

A carousel, or merry-go-round, is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating circular platform with seats for riders that have traditionally consisted of rows of wooden horses or other animals on posts that move up and down to simulate galloping. That has led to other names such as roundabout and flying horses.

I can’t resist commenting on the merry-go-round, galloping nature of life in the 21st century. I am holding on for dear life to a flying horse (or giraffe) as I try to stay caught up on email, deadlines, work projects, mail, volunteer activities, connection to friends, health issues, and family stuff. I find myself in a stressful twit—a condition I promised to avoid when I left the 9-5 merry-go-round for a nice steady freelance life.

I used to blame my harried lifestyle on my kids, except they’re grown and I haven’t lived with them for 20 years. It’s time to admit that I’m the one who clutters up every minute of every day with activity. A therapist has pointed out that this may not be good for my mental health. I apparently have to be reminded of this regularly. This is one of those times. I am pushed to the wall, looking for escape from my life. This is when I begin to fantasize about taking a trip.

The trip fantasy brings me back around to financial reality and I realize my current merry-go-round ride is the only trip I can afford right now.

Anybody else feel a similar going-around-in-circles kind of experience? What do you do about it, other than hold on for the ride?
