Northern England is packed with intensely dramatic topography that has produced a huge slice of the world’s best-loved literature. In a day’s drive, you can poke around the port where Bram Stoker’s Dracula came ashore, get lost on the moors of Wuthering Heights, imagine the seeds of a mutiny on the Bounty, be subject to an executioner’s axe, and wander among Wordsworth’s beloved daffodils.

A ‘walk’ in the County of Yorkshire may take you along a cliff trail perilously close to a 100-foot drop to the North Sea. It may send you over a squishy, foot-grabbing bog on the moors, on a punishing climb up a rocky ‘fell’ (hmmm… interesting word choice for a mountain), and past the ruins of a thousand-year-old abbey-all before tea time.

And so it was that on a sunny April day a friend and I hiked from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby along that North Sea trail, crossing cow-grazing pastureland toward the haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey poised in stark relief before us.
